This is probably for the first time that any refugees or asylum seekers are presented on the fashion runway as models. In a recently organized men’s fashion week in Italy, three refugees from Mali and Gambia are given the lifetime opportunity to walk the fashion ramp.
The above mentioned refugee models are actually farmers or labors by profession. But they had to come here in Italy by boat for survival. Around 140,000 migrants came to Italy from North Africa. Simone Cipriani is the founder of Ethical Fashion Initiative, an organization aiming to help refugees. He says, “As we are in Italy and have a huge refugee crisis, we also want to show that migrants are a resource, We are setting up a training center for refugees and migrants in Italy to work in the industry of fashion and be enabled to go back home and set up their own businesses there.”
The refugee models were treated just like the other fashion models participating in the show. They wore African inspired outfits included the items like, cargo shirts, classy hats and stylish trenches. The names of these African models are kept secret for some legal issues. But overall its a nice and appreciable initiative.
